Evonik offers substitutes for polyamide 12

Evonik Industries is offering its customers various substitutes for polyamide 12 (PA 12), which will be available only in smaller volumes during plant repairs: The extrusion and injection molding compounds based on PA 610, PA 612, PA 1010, and PA 1012 do not require CDT as precursor. They are particularly suitable for use in line systems in the automotive supply industry, including the multi-layer tubing systems patented by Evonik. One such substitute is the bio-based VESTAMID® Terra, already being used by the automotive industry.

The materials offered feature technical properties that are comparable with those of PA 12 and have similar processability. Evonik actively stands by its customers to support them in the best way possible in the selection and qualification process of the alternative materials and in minimizing the impact on supply chains.

VESTAMID® Terra DS– POLYAMIDE 1010 & 610

A polyamide 1010, 610, VESTAMID® Terra DS is produced entirely from monomers obtained from castor oil. Castor oil is in turn obtained from the bean of the castor oil plant, which is used neither as food nor animal feed and whose cultivation does not compete with that of food crops.

VESTAMID® Terra DS molding compounds are semicrystalline and therefore distinguished by high mechanical strength as well as resistance to chemicals and stress cracking. They also have high to very high heat deflection temperatures and a low water-absorption capacity, retaining their good mechanical properties such as elongation at break and impact strength, even in high humidity.

Areas of application for VESTAMID® Terra DS cable jacketing include special cables for the automotive industry, underground cables, in which case the bio-polyamide protects against damage caused by gnawing rodents, and polymer optical fibers.
